Al-Ism (Divine Name) according to the Koran and the Sunna

Linguistic definition

al-Ism : it is a word or an expression qualifying and allowing to recognize a person or a thing.

[al-Mu’jam al-‘Arabiy al-Assâssiy. p644]

Definition in the Tariqa Karkariya

It is the apparent expression of the One being named, both the basis of all His Names and that by which they are united, the foundation of all the senses and their secret. When uttered, the Name is not separated from the Named, yet the Named is neither the Name nor anything other than the Name, but rather the guide and pathway to the different degrees of Existence through the divine Essence.

In the Qur’an

Al-Ism has been mentioned exactly 71 times in the Qur’an, and among the verses mentioned:

[Surah al-Hajj, verse 34/35]

Allâh ﷻ says: “If Allah did not push people away from each other, hermitages would be demolished, as well as churches, synagogues and mosques where Allah’s Name is invoked much.”

[Sahîh Muslim, 216]

According to Anas (radiAllâhu ‘anhu), the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said, “The Hour will not dawn on anyone saying on Earth, ‘Allâh, Allâh'”

[Sahîh Muslim, 215]

According to Anas (radiAllâhu ‘anhu), the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said, “The Hour will not dawn until it is said on Earth, ‘Allâh, Allâh,’ and until a woman walks with shoes, lifting them up and saying, ‘They used to belong to a man,’ and until there are fifty women for one man, and until the sky is seen raining without vegetation growing on the earth.”

[Hadîth Sahîh according to the conditions of Imâm Muslim without Imâm Muslim having reported it]

According to ‘AbduLlâh ibn Mughaffal, the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said, “Allâh, Allâh for my Companions… Allâh, Allâh for my Companions… Do not insult them after me, for those who loved them loved them only through their love for me, and those who hated them hated them only through their hatred against me. Those who harm them harm me, and those who harm me harm Allâh, and those who harm Allâh, He may not take them back.
